Digital Television

What sort of digital recorder would you recommend?

There are 2 clear choices in our opinion:

  1. If you just record TV programs and you may sometimes want to record 2 programs at the same time or watch a recorded program while recording another then the Nextwave PVR6990 is the pick of the bunch. Very easy to operate and over 100 hrs of recording time and it records in HD as well as SD and it has all the latest connections.
  2. If you want to record TV but also record Pay TV or anything else such as video camera onto Hard drive or DVD or play back your Digital camera SD card directly or record it to disc and as also use it as a DVD player then the new Panasonic DVD recorder with Twin HD tuner and 250g hard drive at $1099 is the current pick of the crop.

I've just moved house, there's an antenna on the roof, but we get NO picture.

The most common cause of this problem is that the power supply for the TV antenna booster is missing, not plugged in or not turned on.

Check for a small black transformer (similar in size to a mobile phone charger) It is normally plugged in to the power point and TV point in the lounge or family room. If it is there, turn it on. If not there, obtain one either from the real estate, previous owner (may have taken it by mistake) or from us - we sell them and advise how to install.  Or call us and we will come and check it for you!

Do I need a digital antenna to get Digital TV?

Not always but it is recommended. If you are in a good signal area you can sometimes keep using the old Analogue antenna, but if it starts playing up then its time to upgrade. If you are in a fair to poor signal area then almost always upgrade.

Do I need a different digital antenna for high-definition Digital TV?

No, all digital antenna are also suitable for High Definition. However for High definition it sometimes pays to go for the more powerful (larger) digital antenna for better reliability.

I want a flat screen TV - is plasma or LCD better?

Neither is outright better than the other but each has its best application.

Plasma is best from 42" and upwards, in bright rooms with side lighting or when viewed from side angles a lot. Plasma is cheaper, brighter and still better for fast action.

LCD is best for normal TV viewing up to 40" maybe 46" at a pinch, lots of light directly behind you at the viewing position, video games and where it is also used as a computer monitor or media centre display. LCD is getting cheaper but still more expensive than Plasma. Also LCD is greener - i.e. it uses less power and generates less heat. This also makes it perfect for small spaces and caravans. LCDs are also lighter to carry.

Hope that helps!

Set Top Box

What do I do if my digital TV picture breaks up too often?

It is time to call in a professional with the right test gear to check from the antenna to the TV to find the cause and advise the remedy. Without a proper digital meter you are flying blind.

The TV picture sometime feezes or goes blocky. Is this normal?

Yes, even in the best possible installations this still occurs occasionally.

2-5 times in a half hour show is not unusual. But if it is frequent or continual then there is something wrong. One of the trickiest things with digital is that it goes from a perfect picture to a frozen or no picture and back with no in between showing you what is going wrong. Digital is susceptible to electrical interference caused by power lines, microwaves, electric motors and faulty light transformers and dimmers- to mention a few!

On analogue TV you just got a few dots and dashes across the screen and the picture and sound was still OK. With digital the image cuts out and back often losing sound and picture for a moment.
